Dance Program Policies

Dance Etiquette

At our studio, our primary goal is for your children to have fun while learning dance technique and a strong work ethic. We expect all dancers to show respect to themselves, each other, and all instructors.

You will see our instructors enforcing the following rules:

  • Be prepared for class. Proper dress code is required for all dance classes.

  • Hair must be pulled up and secured back.  Ballet students must wear hair in a bun.

  • Use the restroom prior to class.

  • Do not miss class frequently (see attendance policy).

  • No cell phones in the dance studio.  (Please keep all personal items in your dance bag.)

  • No gum is allowed in class.

  • Be respectful and kind to instructors, peers, and all Soul Studios staff.

  • Do not talk during class, unless you are asking a question.

  • No leaning, lounging or hanging on the ballet barres.

  • Clap at the end of class to show respect for yourself, your fellow dancers, and the instructor.

  • If injured, tell instructor prior to class…work slowly and carefully, or sit down and observe.

Ballet

  • Black Leotard: A properly fitted black leotard is required for all ballet classes. The leotard should provide comfort and allow for freedom of movement while maintaining a neat appearance.

  • Pink Tights: Pink ballet tights should be worn with the leotard. The tights should be of a sufficient thickness to provide modesty and support, while allowing the instructor to observe body alignment and technique.

  • Pink Ballet Shoes: Pink ballet shoes should be worn for all classes. The shoes should be properly fitted to the dancer's feet, providing support and flexibility. Ensure that the shoes are well-maintained and free from excessive wear.

  • Hair in Bun: Dancers are required to have their hair neatly pulled back into a secure bun. The bun should be positioned at the crown of the head and held in place with hairpins, hairnets, and/or other appropriate hair accessories. This ensures that the dancer's line of sight is clear and distractions are minimized.

  • Minimal Jewelry: For safety and convenience, dancers should refrain from wearing excessive jewelry during class. Small stud earrings are generally acceptable, but other jewelry pieces that could interfere with movement or become a hazard are discouraged.

Tap

  • Black Leotard: A well-fitted black leotard is required for all tap dance classes. The leotard should allow for ease of movement while maintaining a neat and professional appearance.

  • Pink Tights: Pink ballet tights should be worn with the leotard. The tights should be of a sufficient thickness to provide coverage and support, while allowing the instructor to observe body alignment and movement.

  • Black Tap Shoes: Properly fitted black tap shoes are an essential part of the tap dance attire. The tap shoes should be in good condition, providing a clear and resonant sound while tapping.

General Guidelines

  • Neatness and Presentation: Dancers are expected to arrive at class with their attire properly worn and their hair securely in a bun. The overall appearance should reflect a sense of discipline and respect for the art form.

  • Personal Hygiene: Good personal hygiene is crucial in a ballet studio. Dancers should maintain clean bodies, trimmed nails, and appropriate use of deodorant. Additionally, proper foot care and hygiene are essential, particularly when wearing ballet shoes without socks.

  • Respect for Studio and Others: Dancers should treat the studio space, instructors, and fellow dancers with respect. This includes arriving on time, being attentive in class, and following the instructor's guidance.

  • Adaptations: Instructors may occasionally specify variations to the dress code for specific classes, such as pointe work or variations. Dancers should always be attentive to any special instructions provided.

Adhering to the ballet dress code not only promotes a unified and professional appearance but also ensures that dancers are prepared to engage fully in the art of ballet. It is a reflection of commitment, discipline, and respect for the tradition and practice of ballet and tap.

Studio Rules

  • No food or drinks other than water inside the studios. No exceptions!

  • No cell phones, smart watches (like Apple Watch), smart earphones (like Air Pods) are allowed in the dance rooms at any time. If they are inside a dance bag, they should be turned off. If dancers are wearing these in class, they will be asked to remove and take to front desk staff for safekeeping until class is over.

  • All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times unless they are in class.
